When I first read the question, I thought of how I, personally, approach online communication. This had me thinking about the interpersonal side of the matter. When I scanned a few of the given answers, though, I realized others had really taken it to mean platforms and such. I’ll answer for both.
A bit of a dinosaur, to be sure, I mostly stick to Facebook and Gmail. I also have IG, X, Discord and LinkedIn, which I’m just now introducing actively it into the mix for creative/ professional purposes. That said, I’ve been really slow to get regular with these, which is something I want to do for sure in 2024. Not a resolution, just framing the goal. I know how useful these platforms can be for exposure, networking, and access to resources and opportunities. Truthfully, though, I like to keep things lean. I have ADHD, and find streamlining really useful, albeit a challenge.
Now, for the more interpersonal-personal focus, the fact is that exposure issues loom heavy in my approach (read: lack there of) to communicating online. I often feel scared to share, either because of how my offerings will be received, or because of what entaglements they will get me into. As such, I have to just linger and spy on other peoples’ communication. This isn’t because of nefarious motives, or anything like that. I just like observing others. I do it in real life — people watching, eavesdropping, etc. And I do it online. I realize this makes me sound like a creep, and maybe I am, but I’m working on it. Ha. This little confessional, I hope, is a step in the right direction. I can’t stay a lurker forever. Help!
Lord, Grant me the confidence to step out into the light and let the world know that I, too, am here! But please don’t let me spill so much information that I get hacked.
P.S., Even this was scary.
