I wish my pet would just understand…

First of all, who writes these prompts? Don’t they know not everyone has a pet, or wants everyone to know what their first name is? ha.

I do not have a pet, and the reason is that I go away periodically and feel it would be unfair to leave Nialls, or Lego, or Pimms (Yes, these are names I’ve given to imagined pets….one day…sigh.), alone or with a stranger. That said, I come very close to breaking down periodically, and am afraid I will do so the next time I see some mesmerizingly cute cat face that says, “I’m yours. Take me home now.” So, I guess maybe this is a really great prompt for me after all. I need to practice what I would try to get Methusela to understand. Okay, here goes…

“Look, Methusela. You’re a big cat now. It’s time for you to go on a trip with me. There is no reason you can’t enjoy a plane ride. Don’t look at me like that. I’m serious. Look, here is your ticket. (NOTE: This is not a real ticket. It’s one I’ve made myself to give the cat a greater sense of autonomy). Yep, you’re getting on a plane. You’ll have your own seat and everything! (Not really.). And they have movies and free food and peanuts…your favorite! You’ll love it. And when we land, we will be in another place. With a different language, and trees, and museums, and probably a whole bunch of other cats…you never know, you might meet someone. I promise you it will be really really fun, and when we get back, all the other cats in the building will be jealous because you’ll have done something they have only dreamt of. And even if they don’t know what exactly is different about you, and you are not exactly capable of communicating that, they will just sense a little je ne sais quois in your manner…. What’s that? No, you can’t jump from the plane if you don’t like the movie.”

Sigh. I guess I’ll just have to wait for self-sustaining cats.
